Superstar of the Aegean

The superstar island of the Cyclades is Santorini! I have been traveling to this mythical island for many years. It has become a yearly must-do destination to recharge and bask in all its magic and healing properties with a hint of luxury.  

The name Santorini itself comes from the words “Santa” and “Irene” coming from a small Catholic Church of Saint Irene in the village of Perissa. “Irene” comes from the Greek word “Eirini” in the name which means “peace.”

Ground Yourself

Accordingly, the island is impeccably named as it exudes peace, beauty, truth and love. Even its geographical and topography contribute to this “peace” as most of the island is made of two types of rock: basalt and rhyolite. Basalt stone is used to promote physical and emotional healing. It’s a grounding stone to connect with the earth, to focus, and find strength with oneself. Furthermore, rhyolite is believed to assist in fulfilling goals and making dreams come true. And so, Santorini is usually on the bucket list of many people, fulfilling dreams at every moment.

Ancient Features, Timeless Beauty

Santorini is a mythical superstar island for many reasons ranging from its historical and geographical significance of volcanic eruptions to the Minoan civilization. Originally named Thera, the island experienced one of the most important volcanic eruptions in human history. This caused the collapse of the center of the island, forming the caldera. Today, the caldera, a cauldron-like hollow, is one of the most beautiful sightings in the world. In addition, the excavations at Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan city, have added to the islands’ reputation. These excavations suggest a highly advanced society and links to the lost city of Atlantis.

I like to imagine that the story from the philosopher Plato who describes an advanced civilization sinking into the ocean is Atlantis and takes place right in Santorini where we feel and see the present day caldera. 

Wow, Santorini! What a View!

The caldera view is beyond impressive, hair-raising and truthfully never gets old in my mind. Sometimes, we visit a place once and we check it off our list, yet the magic of the caldera is a view that will forever be fresh and never forgotten. It is a culmination of the deep blue Aegean sea, the darkness of the caldera, and the striking cliffs of the island’s topography and the white washed buildings at the top is one of a kind.

It’s also known for its traditional villages, top culinary from its locally grown produce and its wine with a variety of grapes only grown there. 

Also, “they” the mythological Greek gods and goddesses and the everyday people say it’s one of the best sunset views in the world!!  

Santorini is, undoubtedly, a destination for everyone, not just for lovers!! Yes, there is a romanticism about the island yet it is an island for all. Especially if you’re looking for true bliss and to have a divine time in a destination that holds a magical allure. 

Here is some information: 

Getting to Santorini:

• By Air: Santorini has an international airport (JTR) with direct flights from major European cities during the tourist season. For those flying from other parts of the world, connecting flights through Athens are frequent and convenient.
• By Sea: Ferries from Athens (Piraeus port) to Santorini are a popular option. High-speed ferries take approximately 5 hours, while regular ferries take about 8 hours. There are also ferry connections from other Cycladic islands like Mykonos, Naxos, and Paros.

Getting Around Santorini:

• Car Rentals: Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore the island at your own pace. There are several car rental agencies at the airport and in Fira.  Secret tip: Arrange a car rental directly with your hotel or Airbnb host.  They have deals with local agencies and the car can come directly to you once you arrive at your accommodation.  Also, it’s best to prearrange your transfer to your accommodation from the port or airport directly with your booking as there are no set addresses on the island and for the optimal arrival experience it is best to have a host waiting for you upon your arrival. 
• ATV/Quad Bikes: A popular option for many visitors, consequently offering flexibility and a bit of adventure.
• Public Transport: Buses connect major towns and attractions, but schedules can be irregular, especially off-season.
• Taxis: Readily available but can be expensive during high season.  Pre-booking is recommended.

Where to Stay in Santorini

Luxury Hotels:

2. Kamari Beach: Known for its black sand and clear waters, Kamari Beach is well-organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a promenade lined with cafes and restaurants.
3. Perissa Beach: Another black sand beach with excellent facilities, water sports, and vibrant nightlife options.

4. Vineyards and Distilleries: Santorini is known for its wines. Tour and taste at some of my favorites: Domaine Sigalas, Venetsanos Winery, Vassaltis Winery, Estate Argyros and Anhydrous Winery. 
5. Cooking Lessons: Join a cooking class at Petra Kouzina in Megalochori to learn how to prepare traditional Greek dishes.
6. Pottery Lessons: Take a pottery workshop at Earth & Water Pottery Studio in Kamari.
